Apology accepted - sometimes it can be confusing trying to figure out who
started a thread and who asked the original question(s).
But I take strong exception to your statement that "home schooling is a lot
like school schooling." (Even if it wasn't directed at me!)
In my opinion, and in my family's life, there is no comparison!!! Absolutely
no point of comparison whatsoever! I know some people do "school at home"
but that does not describe the majority of homeschoolers - many, many of us
are unschoolers. In fact, the *majority* in this country (Israel) are
unschoolers. Some [...]41_3Aug200816:36:12+0300fox.louise@GMAIL.COM

1st of all I well understand home-schooling - I home schooled for 2 years
and produced 400 sheets on chumash and Rashi which I sometimes mention on
this list.
You misunderstood my statement. When I said "home schooling is like
school schooling" it was in a CONTEXT of trying to make peace between
hostile parents / in-laws and home schoolers. It was not an absolute
statement. Of course home schooling is vastly different. But the point to
make to continuingly hostile parents and in-laws is that due to
technology home-schooling is "more like" school schooling then it use to

Hi Rachel,
That would be great! The article is for Mishpacha magazine. I'm doing a
broad-spectrum, completely unbiased piece just talking about all the
different options, how people do it, etc. There will be no "angle", no
hostility, and nothing unflattering :-). [...]46_4Aug200811:06:56+0300rachel.gurevich@GMAIL.COM

If your computer has a sound card (or on-board) sound that came with any
software then you can plug the tape recorder into the input jack and record
it. Then the computer can write a CD or DVD that is readable by a CD/DVD
player.

The only practical way is to hookup a cassette player's headphone to a
computer's mic and record each whole side to a single WAV file, then split
it into separate mp3s, or one long one.

My husband is having some concerns about our 6 year old boy, who is not
reading yet. DH also feels that DS's prayer and bible skills are not up
to par. With the back-to-school spirit in the air, he felt we ought to
put DS into school this year.
Are there are any parents out there of older (post bar mitzvah)
homeschooled boys who would be willing to talk to my husband on the
phone about your kids and experiences? My husband's not a big
writer/e-mailer. If so, would you please send us a note and contact info

My 8yo was not into reading and davening at age 6, but he was keen on
listening to tapes and CDs. He learned a lot of davening by memorizing and
in the last year or so has taken more interest in the fact that he can
actually read the words as he says them. He's also reached the stage where
he can read/learn more of the davening than he originally learned by heart.
It's exciting to see/hear him gradually doing more and more. [...]42_15Aug200800:40:13+0300fox.louise@GMAIL.COM

I'm sure my husband would be happy to speak to yours. Do you still have our number? Feel free to print out whatever I wrote to share with him, if that's more useful.
I took the 'better late than early' approach with my oldest son, now 15, whom you met. He did learn to read early, because we were living in Israel, so he started at 3. But I delayed other things when I didn't feel he was ready or it would have been premature - chumash, shul attendance, and gemara.
