I recently received a DVD player as a gift, and I'd like to
use it L'tov. I'm deeply ambivalent about electronic media
for kids, but here goes.
Could list members recommend their favorite DVDs for kids...
especially ones with Jewish or Hebrew content, but also good,
clean, non-scary stories for family viewing? This would be
primarily for my 5-year-old, who is intellectually
sophisticated (aren't all our kids? ;-)) but who has been
quite sheltered from pop-media (to the good, I think). [...]42_25Feb200816:33:48-0600jrmoran@UCHICAGO.EDU

occasionally watch these DVD's on the computer. Sincerely, Sarah

They feature Dudu Fisher as a preschool teacher who takes his kids on
amazing adventures that center on holidays and general Jewish themes. Even
my 8 year old loves them. They are all in Hebrew with English subtitles.
Although we donšt speak or understand Hebrew on that level, the stories and
acting more than make up for it. We have picked up a lot of Ivrit from
these. I highly recommend all of them! [...]42_26Feb200817:20:20-0700najova@EARTHLINK.NET

but I've been Tivo-ing the television series for my 5-yr-old and we enjoy
them. They are usually adaptations of Torah stories (Joseph and his
brothers, the Purim story, etc). There may be Christian stories, but I'm not
familiar w/ them and the stories are so highly adapted as to make them
unrecognizable. They teach good lessons (material objects don't make you
happy, don't tell lies or they'll grow and grow, don't covet/take what isn't
yours) and I feel comfortable letting her watch each episode after I've seen
it once. [...]44_28Feb200807:17:21-0500uriah01002@CHARTER.NET

I haven't seen them all, though, so I always prescreen new ones before my kids see them. By the way, there was recently a Veggie Tales tv series that a friend taped for me. According to her, these were required by the tv network to be toned down in their religious content - didn't want to offend anyone, I guess. I don't know if they are still being aired and if so, when. [...]50_28Feb200808:30:31-0500rachelturniansky@HOTMAIL.COM
