My son will become bar mitzva (in'shalla) later this month
(p.Mishpatim). We decided he should start wearing tallis and tefillin
30 days before his birthday. He seems to have a lot of problems
managing this, with the tefillin falling off his arm, etc. I remember
from my own beginning days this was not uncommon. But I cannot remember
how long it took me to get comfortable with them. I realize it will
vary tremendously according to the boy.
What have other people experienced? Any [...]48_9Jan200808:56:28-0600billbernstein@BELLSOUTH.NET

Bill,
Wishing you and your family a big mazal tov on your son's
upcoming bar-mitzva! May he grow in Torah and mitzvot,
find his basherte and give you much Yiddishe Nachas!
I'll skip over my favorite jokes about using duct tape, etc.,
to keep the tefillin on tight. The two things I do that keeps
me together are 1) after tightening the strap and wrapping it
around the upper arm once, I pull my shirt sleeve over the tefillin;
the correct sleeve width will keep the tefillin pressed tightly
to the bicep; 2) I twist my arm below the [...]48_9Jan200809:44:21-0600bdickman@ALCATEL-LUCENT.COM

Most people don't know it but you have the right to slip your sleeve over
hand tefillin. So after putting on your tefillin you can slip your sleeve
or sweater over it.
You can try this.
There is even a philosophical idea behind this. The HAND tefillin
symbolizes OUR ACTIONS while the HEAD tefillin symbolizes OUR BELIEFS. We
should always be public about our beliefs (HEAD TEFILLIN EXPOSED) but we
have the right to be discrete about our good deeds/actions (HAND TEFILLIN
COVERED) [...]38_9Jan200819:41:25-0500rjhendel@JUNO.COM

I haven't followed this whole thread but I'll jump in. My son started laying tefillin two months prior to bar mitzvah. Now, two months post, he is wrapping quite competently.

It's been shown to be more accuarate scientifically than printed encyclopedias, there's been a push for scientists to add to pages in their fields, and it's always being updated.
