what are your favorite Jewish-themed kids' books?

I've personally found it difficult to find picture books that
meet these criteria:

1) Substantive Jewish content, preferably traditionally -
oriented,

2) Beautiful illustrations, attractive layout, etc.,

3) Convey values without being excessively preachy or overbearing,

4) Engaging, creative stories (I have an aversion to talking
matzos, crying kiddush cups, etc.)... [...]42_17Oct200617:05:14-0500jrmoran@UCHICAGO.EDU 559 64 31_Re: Favorite Jewish kids' books12_Rena Weisman19_renaweisman@COX.NET31_Tue, 17 Oct 2006 19:41:53 -0700518_iso-8859-1 Jennifer,

Most of my favorite books, that are not Yom Tov related are from HaChai
publishers. One of their great authors is Dina Rosenfeld. Her books are
beautiful stories with beautiful illustrations. Topics vary widely from
yarlmulka and tzedaka to the five senses.

Breslov Research Institute has picture books of Rebbe Nachman stories.
The link above to their website gives a one line explanation of each
story. (and it's nice to buy from such a great company and their

which is a great picture book themed for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur (via
Tashlish). The main character throws his sins into the sea, but never
really does tshuva so it create a sea monster which threatens to consume
his children (which he so longed for, got a blessing from a rebbe for,
and was then warned by the rebbe about the day he'd lose these precious
blessings)! It's got wonderful illustrations and was engaging enough for
a whole range of ages. We had tons of guests for [...]39_18Oct200606:11:56+0200tolife18@JUNO.COM 1090 99 31_Re: Favorite Jewish kids' books15_Rachel Gurevich25_rachel.gurevich@GMAIL.COM31_Wed, 18 Oct 2006 12:05:47 +0200687_ISO-8859-1 Hello,

You're right, it is difficult to find quality Jewish literature...

One of my FAVORITE picture books, which is for I'd say ages 4/5 to adult, is
The Lost Princess, illustrated by Dovid Sears, based on Rebbe Nachman's
story of the lost princess. Published by the Breslov Institute.

Does anyone have recommendations for treatments of "Bible

tricky to do these well. The picture books either take all the

they're too violent or scary for a little kid... [...]42_18Oct200611:13:00-0500jrmoran@UCHICAGO.EDU 1220 27 10_Mazal Tov!6_Zohari20_najova@EARTHLINK.NET31_Mon, 23 Oct 2006 16:31:54 -0600364_US-ASCII We are happy to announce the birth of our fourth child, a girl named Baila
