I don't hold them responsible if I neglect to tell them the due date is coming up, but if I reminded them about returning the book and they didn't find it and put it in the return pile, then they pay. They haven't had to pay too often, other than a couple of lost items - my son paid $8 for a lost cassette and my daughter paid $6 for a lost paperback that she could have bought for 25 cents at a thrift store.
