The national merit contest is based on PSAT scores which are taken in the
fall of the junior year of high school. Homeschoolers can sign up and take
them with a local school or alternate location. They are given on Saturdays,
but you can get a religious exemption and there is an alternate Sunday date.
(I may be confusing that with the SAT's, but if so then the PSAT's are
midweek). If you score in the top something percent of your state (it's less
than one percent) you get a Letter of Commendation ranking and then are
eligible to [...]49_LPBBJIADABHKBEKLJEPAOEJFCKAA.suelap@earthlink.net

began homeschooling for negative reasons. I would
also have to say that my son is not a poster boy for
hsing.
My younger son, whom I also hs, would probably do
terrific in school. But I have decided to keep him
out as well. It is mostly for negative reasons. I
don't like the pressures of the day schools around
here. I don't like the bad attitudes and cynicism of
the children in school. I feel there are a lot of
opportunities, especially in terms of group activities

I live in NYS. We are required to test at least every
other year between 4th and 8th grade. Then every year
in high school. This year my older child is in 6th
grade.
I use a test for hsers that I can administer at home
that is untimed and can be broken up over several
days. Under these circumstances I do not object to
the tests. [...]45_3Nov200213:32:43-0800(PST)barbmazor@yahoo.com

First, I apologize for not responding to the list on
this sooner. This is the first opportunity I have had
since Sunday to devote time to this.
On Sunday I wrote a response to Aviva's question on
why we each chose to hs and why so many people have
negative impressions of homeschooling. Upon rereading
what I wrote, I see how badly it was written it and
could easily be misconstrued. Apparently, a few
people took offense and felt personally attacked by
what I wrote, and made a point of writing in. Those
posts were not forwarded because [...]45_9Nov200217:15:40-0800(PST)barbmazor@yahoo.com

Drool! I am so jealous. I am ready to move to Boston.
(not!)
Seriously, is your group only for observant hsers or
all Jewish hsers? Would you like me to forward your
announcement to the JewishHomeschoolers list? I know
there are a few Beantowners there.
