rocks and minerals. How have people managed this topic? Are there
materials out there that do not emphasize the theory that all rocks have
developed over great time periods? We have been succesfully using
Science in a Nutshell kits and other things, but I suspect their "Rock
Origins" kit won't be appropriate. [...]27_3C05645E.9070109@kosher.com 319 96 27_Re: rocks and minerals unit9_S. Sloman19_ssloman@hotmail.com30_Sun, 2 Dec 2001 10:00:31 -0500397_iso-8859-1 Petra,

The issue is that we know very well that everything must be within the age
we know the world to be, according to Torah and mesorah, as taught to us
through the ages by the brilliant rabbis to which you allude. The question
is how to resolve that with the assertions by textbooks that things are much
older. There are various explanations for such things. [...]40_2Dec200110:00:31-0500ssloman@hotmail.com 416 1543 27_Re: rocks and minerals unit47_Israel (Ira) Friedman and Tzviya (Fawn) Brickel21_ifriedma@actcom.co.il31_Mon, 03 Dec 2001 09:00:00 +0200615_us-ascii Elise,
There are certainly interesting analyses that have been done by observant
Jewish scientists which point out how the first seven "days" could have
been very diffferent than our current understanding of a 24-hour day. (For
example, see _In the Beginning_ by Nathan Aviezer)
On the other hand, I often make it a point to say to my children that, for
example, science's *best understanding" of the age of rocks is that they
are millions of years old. I point out that this is a *theory* and that
science is built upon theories, which are our *best* explainations of the

ordinary people, I am not familiar with any sources saying that it is meant
as a metaphor, per se, with "seven days" being understood to mean to mean
either a lot of time or a tiny amount of time, in a general way. If there
are Torah sources for the metaphorical approach, it would be interesting and
helpful to see them. [...]40_5Dec200115:38:25-0500ssloman@hotmail.com 2025 1637 11_Re: lurking9_S. Sloman19_ssloman@hotmail.com30_Wed, 5 Dec 2001 16:27:40 -0500689_iso-8859-1 I have found the advice you give below to be so very true and so very
important to remember!

I was, in fact, just a few days ago wondering what had happened to you.
Glad to know all is well and that your absence has been for good reasons.

I never dreamed you would make your reappearance on the list describing such
a far-out paper.

Be having a wonderful Chanukah!
