Does anyone know what t'filot for shaharit are typically
said in the 4th and 5th grade classrooms at a mdoern
orthodox Jewish day school? Do you know if they are
recited out loud in unison, or individually in silence?
Please answer if you do.

I mentioned that Abie, age 10, (formerly known as
Abba-Natan - long story) will be attending day camp this
summer. The camp has t'fila every morning. [...]41_1Jun200101:13:19-0400aimpe@compuserve.com 69 458 15_T'fila - Part 213_Barbara Mazor20_aimpe@compuserve.com30_Fri, 1 Jun 2001 01:15:00 -0400578_ISO-8859-1 All -

Has anyone had success in instilling a good
attitude in their children towards t'fila? How do
you teach young children the importance of
t'fila?

As I mentioned in the last post, Abie had, and
still has, a lot of trouble with t'fila. He has a
real aversion to it. When we first took him out of
school and we didn't know he had an LD or what an
LD is, we, as well meaning parents, did everything
we possible could to make it even more unpleasant
for him. We were convinced he was willful, lazy and
rebellious. You [...]41_1Jun200101:15:00-0400aimpe@compuserve.com 528 80 27_LD's are real not invented?13_Barbara Mazor20_aimpe@compuserve.com30_Sun, 3 Jun 2001 09:13:22 -0400691_ISO-8859-1 Merilyn -

I have this book and have read several other books by Thom
Armstrong. While I admire Armstrong as a gifted, empathetic and
compassionate teacher, his books are fairly useless in terms of
practical advice for people dealing with learning issues. Also,

You all seem to express a common theme in your
responses of a tension between the prayer as a
personal communication and the order of t'filot as
listed in the davening. All of you seem to give a
preference to the personal expression.

So where does that leave us? We still have an
obligation to recite a rabbinically proscribed prayer
service. In general, this done almost universally
at a pace that doesn't allow for personal reflection.
Do we, should we teach our children to pick and
choose? What does this say about Rabbinic
obligation? [...]41_3Jun200109:13:24-0400aimpe@compuserve.com 658 477 14_reading Hebrew13_Barbara Mazor20_aimpe@compuserve.com30_Sun, 3 Jun 2001 09:13:28 -0400410_ISO-8859-1 Merilyn -

He already knows his aleph-bet.

Reading is more than the sum of the individual steps of
processing. It is the synchronization, as well.

For, Abie, because the process is overwhelming, he tends

Previously I wrote:

Proscribe means to denounce, condemn, banish, outlaw or exile.
Prescribe means to lay down as a rule or course to be followed.

Obviously, I should have used the latter word. Sorry.

The list discourages the suggestion that teenagers engage in illegal
activity.

Thank you for the correction. Now to make it halachic, as well, say they
should buy grape juice every EREV SHABBOS. :-)
