I know this may seem like a strange question, but I know
we have a lot of people on this list with a wide range of
knowledge. So here goes, maybe someone knows the
answer.

How did we come to pronounce the word "one" as "wun"?

This question came up when Jacob asked me what a
"one way" sign said. When I told him, he said "That's not
right. There is no 'W' at the beginning." So I told the kids
that some words are not spelled the way they are pronounced
nowadays, but are spelled the way the [...]41_1Mar200122:31:20-0500aimpe@compuserve.com 392 29 24_How do ya like it there?13_Barbara Mazor20_aimpe@compuserve.com30_Sun, 4 Mar 2001 12:28:39 -0500666_ISO-8859-1 Rivky -

Wow, Rivky, you'll be able to publish a book
when you get done with this survey

It is a go for us to go to Southfield for Pesach.
We will be staying until Wednesday morning
I think. I hope we will be able to get
together.

I'll try to answer your survey soon.

----------
Why is modern English one pronunced as "wun" and not as "oen"? Cf. alone,
lonely, only which contain the same morpheme; cf. further bone, stone, which
used to rhyme with one; cf. also home, which used to have the same vowel as
one.

I think this is what I was getting at about being a Torah Jew being the most
important thing, rather than the peripheral issues. People here (South

alternative value - I don't think that would be accepted. [...]40_5Mar200119:18:14-0500ssloman@hotmail.com 1061 23 24_How da ya like it there?13_Barbara Mazor20_aimpe@compuserve.com30_Wed, 7 Mar 2001 06:48:35 -0500586_ISO-8859-1 Rivky -
