My kids go to public school, and I just spent $75 for 2 children (1 middle school, 1 high school), and I know the high schooler will come home the first day needing more stuff.
We bought: 2 binders 1 scientific calculator (last year the graphing calculator for the older child was $80) 2 good clear rulers, unbreakable 2 boxes of 24 count colored pencils (I still don't know why they need new ones every year) red pens, black pens, blue pens 1 box fineline markers (Crayola, washable) 1 protractor 2 compasses, [...]

Our daughter is 3 and 1/2 and we are working hard to give her a strong Jewish identity and observant upbringing. My recent observance was triggered by my husband's suggestion that I study Hebrew and other Jewish subjects in order to do a better job of raising our daughter Jewish than my parents did (my upbringing was completely nonobservant). The courses resulted in a very powerful and sudden connection to what I'd been missing my whole life and my husband has been behind me 100% [...]

There are no formal activities in this room related to the holidays.
As a parent of a toddler that will be using the room, I'd love to informally (i.e., not under formal temple auspecies) do something with my almost 3 yo daughter at this time to help teach her (and perhaps some of the other children there). Low cost is ideal. I'm thinking of holiday appropriate crafts, perhaps a simple story, to add to their [...]

One of the things that you have to factor in here is that your husband's family is not Jewish. You may want to begin by separating out by family. (Yes, these cousins have Christmas and, like us, these cousins have Hannukah because we are Jewish...) Let your daughter know that she is now old enough that your family can establish their own traditions and discuss various things that she may want to do for Hannukah. [...]

I agree fully! The second seder, for those who follow Conservative or Orthodox rules and live outside Eretz Israel, is almost always more relaxed, and the third seder, for those who've adapted that tradition, is even more relaxed. [...]
