It's a true story. They were ultimately executed as traitors. The book is written for teenagers.

I remember another book for young teenagers about a Norwegian boy who helped the resistance fighters during WWII. [...] 87 52 31_Re: Bibliography for older kids19_Allison T Schanfeld18_hindasanz@juno.com36_Sat, 5 Jul 1997 23:32:57 -0400 (EDT)391_- Re: Bibliography for older kids by Betsy Schwartz

Whatever happened to Heather Hopkowitz? - by Charlotte Herman, (about a girl who becomes more interested in her religion while staying w/ an orthodox family) probably in the children's section, but i really enjoyed it when i was 15.

How about _Pageant_ or _The Night Journey_ by Kathryn Lasky. The first is about a young Jewish girl dealing with being a liberal and Jewish in a conservative WASP community during the Kennedy adminstration. The second is how a Jewish family "escapes" from Russia in the early part of this century during the pograms. I have three children coming up next spring, and was uncomfortable with the usual "blow-out" kind of celebration. I'm glad to hear that other people feel the same way. Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a religious coming of age, not a social extravaganza, and I don't think huge parties really maintain that feeling. Thanks for posting! I would recommend "The Jewish Book of Why" by Alfred A. Kolatch, and "Jews, God, and History" by Max I. Dimont. Neither goes in the literature section, but they're both good books!

My kids, who LOVE going to shul during the school year, have to be dragged there in the summer. How old are the kids? And is it just this summer, or any summer? They may simply be geting to the age where they are transitioning from thinking that shul is "what we do because thats what we do". They may now be thinking that it shouldn't apply to them. We had a beautiful baby boy just over a year ago (baruch HaShem). From our house it is about 40 minutes drive to the nearest orthodox shul, about 50 minutes to the nearest kosher butcher etc.

We have discussed the problem at length with our Rabbi, with family, with friends, even with the Beth Din. Finally we were forced to the conclusion that, if we want our son to grow up with an awareness of his roots and a proper Jewish education, we will have to move.
