I am a Jew-by-choice since age 19. My soon-to-be-ex-husband's family was not particularly observant--they did the High Holidays, Hanukah and Pesach and that's about it. We have reconstructed this minhag in our family by allowing everyone to compile their own special list of ushpizin. I usually print out everyone's list of usphzin on the computer, using big 48 pt. type. Their parents are obligated to raise them in such a way that they will perform the mitzvot when they grow up. Generally speaking Orthodox Rabbis will not consent to convert a child who is going to be raised non-Orthodox. Their reason is that being a Jew adds many obligations to a person's life which are unlikely to be performed in a non-Orthdox environment. Hence performing the conversion will increase sin. So while it is true that all Jewish denominations accept Orthdoox conversions, that option may not be available. [...]

Dear DAvid,
I haven't looked at the exact Hebrew text of songs to compare them, but there is a difference in the notation system of vowels, eg. accent marks, or the kamatz katon, which to Hebrew readers would make a difference. Very often we read Hebrew with an English or European reading accent, that is, we emphasize the wrong sy-LAB-blend. Hebrew uses an ultimate accent more often than not; English is penultimate. [...]

Dear Marjorie,
Living in Israel my kids were already exposed to information about the Holocaust in nursery school (gan). The subject just couldn't be completely ignored - not with the memorial siren sounding for 2 minutes and everyone stopping everything they're doing (traffic comes to a stand still, both the sales people and the buyers immediately stop selling and buying) and stand still in memory of those who perished in the Holocaust. The ganenets (nursery school teachers) have to explain to the kids why they do this and why they expect the kids to do the same, so some information [...]
