I have a similar question. We've been giving a small prize to the children after they find the afikomen (the same prize to both, no matter who actually found it first). In my family, gift giving entered into Passover in two ways: First, since it is a sort of new year's eve, everyone got new clothes to wear during the seder. Second, the kid who found the afikoman could ask for pretty much whatever s/he wanted. S/he was holding the adults to ransom since without the afikoman they couldn't really finish the seder. Dear Claire and Chevreh,

There is a strong and reasonably strong tradition, davka, precisely, of giving gifts on Passover, included in at least Maimonides/Rambam.

We are instructed that the leader of the Seder/head of the house (sorry about the gender/role formulation, but remember from what time and place it comes) gives gifts to his wife of jewels and special clothing, and to the children sweets and parched corn, and they even snatch each other's matza to keep the attention and involvement of the children. We have the adults hide it and the children find it. The children don't return it to the leader until they get their prizes. This addresses your concern about the afikomen being needed by ythe adults to conclude the seder. But while the children look, the adults sit and shmooz a little. I agree with those who think this is unfair to the children. Since hearing the entire megila is a halachic obligation, and having a 2 year old makes that difficult, our solution was to have a second reading in our house. We all went to shul with our kids, and the fathers heard megila with the minyan while the mothers ran after the kids. Our children's day school (pluralistic, egalitarian, nondenominational) in Palo Alto, CA decided not to cancel Purim festivities because such would be granting a victory to Hamas, rather than following the Torah's prescriptions re reading Megillah, seudah, misloah manot, etc. It's a defensible although troublesome decision. I've been collecting Jewish stories for children since my older daughter was born. I don't remember if I had this problem when Ricki was small (she's 10 now), but these days when I read the stories to my three year olds, I get inundated with questions. Why was Jonah inside the whale? Wasn't he scared? Why did G-d kill all the animals? Why did Ahasueros (spelling?) send Vashti away? Why did Moses' mother put him in the river? Why did Pharoah want to kill Moses? and on and on. Potatoes and matzoh or potato kugel. Kugel recipes are not uncommon, so if you have a Jewish cookbook, you shouldn't have trouble finding one. Matzoh brei is always popular- if you can make pancakes, you can make matzoh brei.

Other traditional Passover foods that are filling and your child might like are gefilte fish and tzimmes. Tzimmes is also pretty easy to make. The seder leader breaks the afikomen and passes it under the table to another adult, who hides it. The children may not look for it until they're done eating--kids eat fast and this gives the adults a chance to finish a leisurely dinner (we usually have 5 courses: egg, salad, soup, entree with veg/kugel, dessert). When it is found the finder negotiates a ransom. Dear Sherri,

It would seem from your posting that one of the "scary" elements if not those which raise questions is/are the illustrations in the story books. Perhaps using a text only, without illustrations, would be more child-friendly and not generate unnecessarily unsettling questions or feelings.

If you are comfortable re-working existing texts, you can create many of your own "stories" from such works as the "Legends of the Jews" by Louis Ginzberg, and "Sefer HaAgadah" translated by Braude. It's been a little while since the infant stages, but let me see if I can remember some of the answers to your questions...

1) I used to clean the high chair VERY well (took out the seat pad, etc., for washing) and then cover the tray with contact paper.

2) I was told by my rabbi that I would only need to buy new nipples for the bottles with disposable plastic linings. The other ons, I used to buy 2 new ones, and keep them with my pesach stuff.
