Well, my son Gedalia is safely back in Palmer, Alaska, having just returned from his NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) Alaska backpacking and mountaineering course for a month, through the auspices of Teva Adventure. Kosher, Shomer Shabbos, and according to Gedalia, "Awesome". The 5 young men(aged 15 and up to maybe 17), and the group leader (Feivel Glasser out of Yerushalyim) made it out all in one piece, though I understand that at times they were borderline hypothermic and sometimes reduced to sticking out storms in tents, having become completely soaked through all their layers despite having the best [...]

Who's paying - your parents or you?. Surely the final decision is yours, taking into account what your son wants, since it's also his big day.
Having a big party is not what a Bar Mitzvah is all about!
Your son is taking his place as a man in the world and standing up before his family, friends and congregation to read from the Torah. That's the truly important bit. People just have parties as the "icing on the cake" and to keep up with the Cohens. Do what you, your Wife and your son want, not be swayed [...]

Stavis, Esq.21_adcstavis@comcast.net29_Sun, 24 Aug 2003 13:32:50 EDT518_- Don't do the party for your parents. Do it the way you, your wife, and your son want it. What are your values and desires? Scale back; Do the invitations yourself; Use a calligraphy program on the computer.
Or, if you have already made the decision to go the big party route (as your mentioning of calligraphers suggests), then try to minimize the crazy stuff and revel in the joy of the simcha. It is a happy occasion, and there is nothing wrong with celebrating it in whatever style suits your family. [...]

I am reminded of the single people seeing kids on occasion misbehave who say, I don't understand this, why don't the parents just set down some groundrules and stick to them. To the extent it is hard to set down groundrules for children, it is somewhat harder for parents. But thanks for the advice. [...]

One example is a beach clean-up (in Eilat) that the bat mitzvah girl (on a visit to Israel) organized for her and her family. Another was the collection of art supplies from family friends that the child then brought to a center for Ethiopian children (in Kiryat Gat) and distributed on her visit to Israel. An example of a long distance mitzvah - nicknamed the Sweetest Mitzvah -- is [...]
