As a chareidi myself I can assure you that the picture is not always as rosy as it seems. Often it is also the result of strict parenting which I doubt you would like to emulate. The schooling is also often different in that the children sit for many hours at a desk and so sitting at a shabes table comes easier. That said it is true that you get [...]

They were shown a video in class and were inadvertently exposed to some graphic pictures of the Holocaust. This has greatly upset my 11 year old daughter and many of her classmates. They knew about the Holocaust, of course, but had never seen pictures before. Now I want to start learning more with her. I have checked out a few books. Most of them are more 'positive', focusing on stories of survival and rescue. [...]

I think a good place to start would be to check out the United States Holocaust Memorial and Museum. http://www.ushmm.org/
They have an extensive collection of teaching tools for many ages. http://www.ushmm.org/education/forstudents/
This is a complicated and difficult story to tell as part of the Jewish legacy and experience.
Quite frankly I don't remember when I first learned of the Holocaust. My father was a history teacher in a NYC high school, so it always seem natural to talk openly about the historical context of most things. [...]

One title that comes to mind is Nine Spoons, a Hanukah story in the Concentration camps.

I'd think that there are probably many such blessings that have been written, but know of only two. One is the traditional thanks to G-d that the parent is no longer responsible for the sins of the child. The other is a poem of hopes for the child's future written by Danny Siegel and printed in the reconstructionist siddur (may the glow of torah be in your eyes). If you know of any others, could you please post them? [...]

Her class has recently been doing an assignment on family trees. This is all well and good, except it is making me (and her, as she is the only Jew in the class) realize how the Jewish immigrant experience is different than all others. [...]

How did the teacher respond to your wife's note? I would think that instead of focusing on a country of origin, your DD could focus on Yiddish as the language of origin, and Jewish Eastern European foods and traditions. If music needs to be involved, perhaps a tape of Yiddish music? [...]
