Hi,

I was recently given cause to wonder what the traditional/Orthodox position is on nursing in public (in front of men to whom one is not married).

I have a more liberal leaning and have never given it a 2nd thought -- I nurse my babies when and where I need to, while attempting to be discreet. However I was recently in a position where I needed to nurse Evan and there was a very Orthodox gentleman in the room, and nowhere private for me to go except to tie up the bathroom. I ended up nursing there but wondered [...] 46 64 53_[SCJ-PARENTING:6117] Re: Looking for some perspective14_Hadass Eviatar17_heviatar@home.com28_Mon, 2 Apr 2001 10:28:40 EDT303_- Adelle Stavis wrote: > > Hi, Everyone, > > Passover is fast approaching, and an issue has come up which has me > wondering whether to keep Pesach this year. > > My 3 year old son, Ian, was seen at a Failure to Thrive Clinic Monday as his > growth has significantly slowed down for the past year. While I agree completely that if my children were in a Jewish day school of any kind (preschool, vacation daycare, grammar school or other) I would strongly oppose any celebration-like acknowledgment of non-Jewish holidays, such as a bunny passing out candy (what next? A bearded man in a fur-trimmed red suit passing out wrapped gifts in December?), it is not at all uncommon for Christian schools to teach about Jewish holidays. First off, a hearty Mazal Tov to all of you!

Second, I can only give anecdotal evidence, but I have nursed my baby in a number of Orthodox venues (shuls and homes) and never been made to feel uncomfortable in the least. When I was a less experienced and discreet nurser, I'd find other places to do it (take a chair into the coatroom at shul) because *I* was [...] 680 61 47_[SCJ-PARENTING:6129] Re: A Jewish Easter Bunny?19_Alexandra J Schmidt28_aschmidt@gematria.crd.ge.com28_Tue, 3 Apr 2001 17:18:28 EDT618_-

I'd use this rather outrageous incident as a spur to inquire, if you do not already know it, what precisely the teaching philosophy, curriculum, and goals for the students are. Even at the preschool level, there are presumably things the children are supposed to be learning, be it the Hebrew alphabet, the Jewish holidays, whatever. According to the teacher, there was a rabbit. According to the director, there was no rabbit, they have a Jewish cirriculum, and a teacher gave out chocolate "balls." I don't know who to believe--certainly, my daughter is inventive, and she might have seen a Cadbury commercial. AFAIK, there was no mention of Easter. Adelle, this is a tough one. My kids are very fussy eaters too, one with a possible S/I issue, though mine are not underweight. If I understand correctly the health issue would affect your son's appearance, but the doctor has not indicated that it would be dangerous to his overall well being. Can some kind soul fill me in on the ? Anyone know any other Hebrew pat-a-cakes?

I've never heard of kugalach, but my sister brought home a set of gold colored cubes from Israel which she called Sheish beish. Not sure they are the same game, but here is what she taught me.

Put the cubes in one hand, and spill them onto the floor. (There is actually a separate maneuver for this, but it is hard to explain. You cup your hands in a kind of 'vee' formed by bringing the hands together, pinky to pinky, palms up. Toss the cubes again, this time catching them in a 'vee' caused by bringing your hands [...] 2807 37 39_[SCJ-PARENTING:6165] Re: Israeli Jacks?15_Fred Rosenblatt15_fredr5@juno.com29_Wed, 25 Apr 2001 18:12:25 EDT462_- In article <001101c0cc05$95d76d00$2c188018@ne.mediaone.net>, "Adelle Stavis" wrote:

When I was in Israel sheish beish was backgammon. Shesh=6 (Hebrew) and Besh=5 (Turkish) but I don't know if that's relevant. Actually, the game you described is kugelach. Your sister was probably introduced to many new games (or names for the same games) during her = stay, and may have gotten confused (as I often do with unfamiliar terms). Shesh besh is actually what we call Backgammon. Kugelach is the Yiddish term, Chamesh Avanim is the Hebrew term, and Israeli Jacks is the [...] 2903 110 38_[SCJ-PARENTING:6169] Re: Israeli games13_Adelle Stavis26_adelle@nospam.mediaone.net29_Thu, 26 Apr 2001 15:54:29 EDT616_- Thanks Aliza and Fred!

Could never figure out why a game w/5 cubes had a name w/six in it. Clears up the mystery.
