I did it. I made my costume for Purim. As you may recall, I am due to have a baby in just a few weeks. My husband and I like to dress us and our daughter in related costumes. This year was particularly challenging because of my burgeoning belly. Some of you may remember the discussion that went on on this list regarding costumes for VERY pregnant women. First of all, Mazel Tov on your baby girl!!
The naming ceremony is how your baby girl will get her Hebrew name and as such it is important that it be done as soon as possible. It is traditionally done by having your husband get an aliyah at the Shabbos or weekly Torah reading. We let her choose her name herself, selecting three (she has three "American" names so she took three Hebrew names as well, this will be one long bat mitzvah, LOL) that had meaning to her, and they had a special ceremony on the bimah during Hebrew school so that all of her classmates could [...]

Thanks for the supplement. There are a variety of "ceremonies" and activities which have been created to facilitate Jewish children having a Jewish name, ceremonies which can certainly take place as you have described.
I've always urged an early naming - as soon as parents and those whom they wish to have join them - but not out of superstition. However, since a Jewish name is not needed unless for ritual purposes, eg. a MiSheBerakh or for use in a religious school environment, it can be delayed without harm. [...]

Many years ago, there were programs where one could volunteer on a Kibbutz.
Pros:
The cost was just airfare, as the volunteers got room and board in return for work.

Cons:
Persistence required, as many Israelis would rather practice their English, and the other volunteers will most likely speak English. [...]

Sadly, we indeed have an occasional Hanukkah show, but it's far more significant that there's a Rugrats Passover show. The problem with Hanukkah shows is that they reinforce the very misleading idea that an acknowledgement of that festival is the right way to introduce "ethnic diversity" to counter the drumbeat of a pervasive Christmas [...]
