The public schools in my town have had a Passover option for years. No, I don't think they consult with anyone about what to serve. It is NOT a kosher option; it is a non-bread option. It is nice that the schools try, even though they really don't *get* it. Beth's "ham on matzoh" story reminds me of the way that the public schools in my area (Northern Virginia, USA) express their sensitivity to the dietary needs of the Jewish and Muslim kids. When they send home school lunch menus, they put little asterisks next to certain options, like the hot dogs, saying *this may contain pork,* presumably so that the Jewish and Muslim parents will have their kids choose a non-pork option. But the fact that an observant Jewish or Muslim kid couldn't eat the [...]

Some suggestions and thoughts--
Our shul has a program called "Israel Experience" where upon bar (bat) mitzvah the congregation allocates an amount of money to fund a trip to Israel for the teenager, with the assumption that the parent will contribute to this fund. Here's a totally different idea for dealing with those "springtime" birthdays in your family:
Get one of those multi-year Hebrew calendars and look up the Hebrew date on which the person was born. Chances are that if their birthday only *sometimes* comes out during Pesach, that person was not actually BORN on Pesach. So find out the Hebrew date on which they were born, and celebrate that date instead of the English one. That way, you'll never have a clash with the holiday! [...]
