Dear Mochin Friends,

Tomorrow night (Thurs.) begins the festival of Shavuot celebrated for one day in Israel
and for two days elsewhere. For those unfamiliar with this festival, I am appending,
below, an essay from the Jewish exoteric section of our website, that briefly explains
Shavuot and, especially, how it relates to Project Mind. by: Rabbi Nathan Glick

Shavuot, the Festival of Weeks and the anniversary of “the giving of the Torah,” presents itself to us as the culmination of a process. Beginning on the second day of Pesach we number days, 49 in all, seven complete weeks. The 50th day, which is implied through our counting, but which is itself never counted, is Shavuot. To understand this festival and the ultimate meaning of the Torah which was given on (or about*) that day, we need to understand the significance of counting that [...]41_7Jun200022:05:36+0300devor@pob.huji.ac.il 1120 53 53_General Semantics and Silva Mind Enhancing Technology24_Lucien F. Thanks for your posting, Chuck. The Monroe Institute has
been successfully involved in the mind training business for
many decades, as is stated.

These and other mental training systems are worthy of some
investigation by PMF for what they may have to offer.

Two such systems from which I have benefited directly
through the years are the General Semantics of Alfred
Korzybski and the Silva Method of Jose Silva. [...]40_7Jun200017:52:21EDTlucien@mindspring.com 1174 78 52_Project Mind and and Silva Mind Enhancing Technology16_devor@huji.ac.il20_devor@pob.huji.ac.il30_Thu, 8 Jun 2000 08:48:33 +0300667_iso-8859-8 Hi Lucien et alia,

Thanks for the question, Lucien. Generally speaking,
systems such as these embody much wisdom and can
often teach us something. Since you're the expert on
Silva, you might point out to us special findings and/or
principles of this or other systems which you feel PM
might have overlooked and from which it might especially
benefit. [...]41_8Jun200008:48:33+0300devor@pob.huji.ac.il 1253 35 14_Re: Meditation16_devor@huji.ac.il20_devor@pob.huji.ac.il31_Sat, 10 Jun 2000 22:35:24 +0300572_iso-8859-1 Dear Mochin Friends,

Just received the message below. Can anybody
be of assistance? If so, please write them directly.

Thanks,

dear mochin companions,
over the past many, many months i haven't spent much
time online & thus have yet to answer most emails from
you who wrote me. (this is in the way of an apology
to many of you.)
it was a great gift to receive an email posting from
david devor regarding Shavuot.
although i am not Jewish but Christian (in a mennonite
flavour with a carmel essene tinge) i find it
personally necessary for me to maintain Jewish roots.
thus Torah, talmud & kabbalah play a major role in my
religious 'observance.'
the Festival of Shavuoth [...]37_14Jun200022:07:33EDTdonmage@yahoo.com 1332 287 70_Question concerning: Ruchani Eye On Israel - Parashat Naso - The Nazir16_devor@huji.ac.il20_devor@pob.huji.ac.il31_Sun, 18 Jun 2000 12:27:07 +0300684_iso-8859-1 B'S"D

Shalom Rav Ariel,

I am sharing this correspondence with my audience and hope
you will want to share it with yours.

Thanks for the insightful Nazir/Kohen analogy. In this day and age,
as you observe, the quality of purificatory, transcendent experience
of A.A. leaves much to be desired. And I would add, "especially in
Yidishkeit."

This does not trouble me as much as it otherwise might because I
am convinced that the principal, Jewish, spiritual mandate is top-down
(Ahava/Mitzvot Asseh) as opposed to bottom-up (Yirah/Mitzvot Al
Ta'aseh). Hillel HaZaken teaches us that, if we are engrossed in the
positive [...]42_18Jun200012:27:07+0300devor@pob.huji.ac.il 1620 34 68_The second cybernetics: Deviation-Amplifying Mutual Causal Processes12_Mountain Man21_prfbrown@magna.com.au29_Sun, 18 Jun 2000 14:18:58 EDT734_iso-8859-1 G'Day All,

Dear Mochin Friends,

Judaism or Israel (the two are synonymous) is perennially taken to task
for its claim for "chosenness" often by those who fail to realize that this is,
par excellence, its principal specificity. While Judaism has many earmarks,
without chosenness it has no raison d'etre and might just as well not exist
(heaven forbid). [...]42_21Jun200011:41:52+0300devor@pob.huji.ac.il 1895 23 32_reply to Mochin from Rabbi Plaut16_devor@huji.ac.il20_devor@pob.huji.ac.il31_Wed, 21 Jun 2000 18:28:03 +0300562_iso-8859-1 Dear David.

Thanks for the generous comment on THE CASE FOR THE CHOSEN
PEOPLE and also JUDAISM AND THE SCIENTIFIC SPIRIT. It will interest
you and your readers to know that both books have also appeared in Hebrew
translation: HA-OMNAM AM NIVCHAR? and HA-YAHADUT V'HA-MADDA.

Cordially,

By MATTHEW FORDAHL
AP Science Writer

Scientists have developed an electronic circuit that mimics
the wiring of the human brain in some ways -- an
achievement that could revolutionize [once again] computer
science and improve understanding of how nature's most
powerful processor works.

The circuit, built on a silicon chip the size of a
fingernail, is far from the thinking machines of science
fiction. For one thing, it cannot learn, the way the brain
can. But researchers say it could result in better speech and
object recognition by computers. '`This is a demonstration of
what's [...]37_23Jun200015:51:14EDThugger@uswest.net
