The 2 examples brought should be similar (I don't always trust the accuracy of the publisher, for a start).

The 'identical letters rule' is mentioned by many (e.g. Rada"k in Michlol) but not agreed by all. Rav Breuer claims that most cases where there is no ga'aya, the sh'va will be NAX (see his book on Ta'amei Hamikra for details). e.g. read hatz'tzon (Gen 14, 8) but rivvot -- nax (Deut 33, 17).
