In a socialist society, some people may choose to live in old-style kibbutz-like communes and others would want nothing to do with collectivism in their private lives. So I'm not particularly bothered by any individual's or a kibbutz's lifestyle choices. But doesn't the real problem reside in the fact that any serious thought of a socialist path in Israeli society as a whole was shut off, and quite long ago? If so, then even the most collectivist lifestyle on a kibbutz, whether 39 years ago (Oy!) when we first [...]

"Gentlemen, bow your heads." Thirty-five years after I used to hear that phrase in Assembly each eighth-grade morning, I still remember the scene clearly. Several hundred of us Middle School and High School students, boys more than gentlemen, in our coats and ties, beginning our day at the private school I attended for a couple of years in Baltimore. The school day started with Assembly, which, in turn, always ended with the Lord's Prayer. And just before the Prayer, the Headmaster would say, sternly but not unkindly, [...]

Besides getting to schmooze up front with the rabbi, the lucky winner's family name will be engraved on Seats 1 and 2 of Row 1, Section DD, at Temple Emanu-El. The winner also will receive free parking, two custom-made prayer shawls and yarmulkes, and a hefty tax write-off. Plus, the winning bidder [...]

This isn't to say that AIPAC, its staff and bankrollers, don't quietly or informally abet the Administration's endeavors. To the extent that AIPAC gives almost exclusive stage presence and airtime to Administration representatives and their supporters, this is--at the very least--informal support. The really scary part of this is that it is becoming less and less true, with little to replace it that will be identified as "Jewish". Still, this should touch nerves in most of us, no?
Steve

I thought I'd made myself clear with my comment below. Let me be a bit clearer.
In response to your query, I don't think Ahma is coming to America to check to learn about our democratic freedoms. If he were, he certainly wouldn't be going to Columbia University for that, would he? My guess he is coming to see how far the naivete of Liberal America can be stretched for his own purposes. You've heard the interviews of the students, I'm sure. "Well, we want to see what he has to say". Really! Where were these students all this [...]

Sue,
I didn't write "no more monuments and no more Psalms," I wrote "no more beautiful monuments and no more ugly Psalms." There are some Psalms that are truly evocative which is to say that tend to bring a memory, mood, or image to bear either personally or in how our culture has reacted to historical events. But with 150 psalms to choose from why or rather how could that benighted Army Chief rabbi have hand picked that offensive psalm 83? I'll accept that he and his growing ilk are enveloped in social, intellectual, [...]

Ahma showed nothing but deceit and duplicitousness. President Bush nominated an Orthodox Jew to be U.S. attorney general. Michael Mukasey, a retired federal judge from New York, is a conservative who has criticized Bush administration policies that have kept detainees from consulting with lawyers. Democrats have praised Mukasey, and his selection represents a shift from Bush's combative defense of the most recent attorney general, Alberto Gonzales, who resigned last month. Mukasey's Jewishness became an issue when a defendant in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing filed a motion to re move the judge, arguing that his allegiances to [...]

The controversial visit of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Columbia University, and his comment that there were no homosexuals in Iran, has partially obscured the continuing threat that Iran's nuclear program poses to both Israel and the United States. In recent weeks, observers sympathetic to Iran have made a series of arguments against an Israeli attack on Iran. These arguments have included: (1) downplaying the significance of the Ahmadinejad's Holocaust terminolgy as mere rhetoric,(2)asserting that Iran, despite Ahmadinejad's comments that Israel should be "wiped off the map" is not [...]
