Why in heavens name would a rational person support Amir Peretz? Peretz refused to build the Histadrut. He merely gave orders to his existing troops in the few organized sectors of the Israeli economy. He didn’t organize any new areas, signed sweet heart agreements with the lowest paying sectors such as the hotel industry, practiced taxation with no representation, (no elected workers committees in hotels and crushing any upcoming competition). He practiced tiered agreements, screwing new workers and allowing hiring through “manpower” companies while protecting a few older workers. [...]

The Histadrut is a very large, cumbersome, complicated animal. It is almost a state within a state. Many have tried and failed to reform it. You can't hold one person responsible for the failures of the system, in the same manner you can't hold a PM responsible for the overall problems of the state (like poverty for example). You judge his policies. If Labor needs Barak back in leadership there is a very serious crisis of leadership. He is a bad politician, a bad leader, a stubborn person who is not wise and does not accept advice. He is [...]

Dear Friends and Readers,
Yesterday, Britain's 120,000-strong University and College Union voted to endorse a motion to boycott Israeli universities, calling on British academics to condemn "the complicity of Israeli academics in the occupation." I don't question the sentiment of wanting to help, and if signing the petition would help that would be wonderful. Actually, the only reason the Wiesenthal Center and other such organizations circulate these vehicles is to mine for email addresses to which they can later send solicitations. The SWC has a habit of shooting with its mouth first, and then getting details later. Anyone interested in knowing what is going on with the UCU, UNISON, the TUC etc can easily pick up the phone and call the JLC. We're more than happy to fill folks in. Is a War between Syria and Israel Inevitable?
By David Eshel
There is a consensus within the Israeli defense establishment and intelligence community that very soon the government will have to make a decision on Syria. Years of passive foot dragging seem to come to an end and a political decision cannot be postponed for long. There are only two major options: Will Israel enter into highly controversial talks with Bashar Assad's regime, or will a military confrontation become almost inevitable? [...]

What a Mess
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
RAMALLAH, West Bank
The Middle East has gotten itself tied into such an impossible knot that Biblical references or Shakespearian quotations simply don't suffice anymore to describe how impossibly tangled politics has become here. Shira Wolosky, a Hebrew University English scholar, suggested to me that maybe Dr. Seuss, in "The Cat in the Hat," offered the best way to sum up the Middle East today. [...]

He is just trying to come to terms with how big the mess is, and with the fact there seems to be no way out of it. In any case, in my view, one thing would be fundamental for Israel in this bad juncture: strong leadership. But there is none in the offing: just bad or worse choices such as Bibi or Barak. Alas, it seems it will take a lot of luck or even maybe a 'miracle' to just survive and get by... To me it looks almost hopeless. Then again, [...]

We haven't had a good ideological discussion in a while so I thought I would try and get one going.

I half listened to a short discussion on the radio yesterday about the newspaper article (nobody seems to have read the book) between Razi Barka'i and Dan Shilon and they didn't seem to take Burg's opinions very seriously, but were more concerned with whether we need to listen to someone who's past record doesn't seem to run a very straight line. Burg is not odious to me at all. I, for one, respect him a lot. I haven't followed the media image of him after he left politics, but I pretty much identify with many things he has said along his career. What makes you think I am a nice guy? If you knew me, maybe you'd think differently. I am sure there are a lot of other people on this list who don't agree with you, even though they don't know me either, in the least. I think we all wish Israel was a different place, one at peace with her neighbors, without poverty and discrimination. A place where the environment was cherished. I might add that we would all probably say much the same thing about America, and maybe even Canada. [...]

ALL EUROPEAN LIFE DIED IN AUSCHWITZ By Sebastian Vilar Rodrigez(*)
I walked down the street in Barcelona, and suddenly discovered a terrible truth - Europe died in Auschwitz. We killed six million Jews and replaced them with 20 million Muslims. In Auschwitz we burned a culture, thought, creativity, talent. We destroyed the chosen people, truly chosen, because they produced great and wonderful people who changed the world. [...]

Interfactional clashes in the Gaza Strip have resulted in a precarious and dangerous security situation. All American citizens are urged for their safety to remain indoors. If there is shooting or explosions in your neighborhood, stand fast and move into the interior areas of your residence away from windows, using mattresses or other means of protection from shrapnel or glass shards. If there is a basement area, move to it. The risk of being caught in crossfire outdoors is great. American citizens in the Gaza Strip should depart as soon [...]

Avraham Burg's New Zionism Editor's Notebook J.J. Goldberg | Wed. Jun 13, 2007
Zionism has meant many things to many people over the past century. To Theodor Herzl and the founders of the Zionist movement, it meant creating a national home to gather in the Jewish people -- to some minds, as a refuge from antisemitism; for others, as a fulfillment of an ancient promise. To Herzl's great critic, the essayist Asher Ginsberg, better known as Ahad Ha'am, Zionism meant building a cultural and spiritual center in Israel to enrich the lives of Jews wherever they live. Gaza is lost, for the time being and there is little that the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah can do to immediately change the course of events. Â The present focus must now [...]

I attended Yad Ari from 50-54, Kinneret in 55, Midwest/Tavor 56-60, as meracez the last year, Naaleh in 61 as merakez; Kvutza near Montreal 62 & 63 as rosh Machaneh. 57-58; I attended the 7th workshop. June 18, 2007 Op-Ed Contributor New Lyrics for Israel By ADAM LeBOR AS Israel prepares to celebrate its 60th birthday next year, it's time to update its national anthem, "Hatikvah" ("The Hope"). Only a single phrase needs to be changed: "nefesh Yehudi," which means a Jewish soul, should be replaced with "nefesh Israeli," an Israeli soul. Why tamper with a beautiful, stirring hymn? To solve what we might call the "Hatikvah" contradiction. [...]

When I first heard this about 10 years ago from an Israeli Arab professor at Haifa University, I also struck me as too PC to consider , ridiculous and insulting to the Jewish people. They are citizens of the State of Israel, which is a democratic nation, and as such all the institutions of the state should include them and others who are citizens. Israel don't do it for "them"--it should do it because Israel is a modern democracy and to honor the prophetic tradition on which it and the Declaration of Independence is based. . Hatikvah was created NOT as the National Anthem of the State of Israel but as the Zionist Anthem. Just as the goals of Zionism must evolve now that the State has been created so must our National Anthem reflect a new reality. This is NOT a Post Zionist thought it is a realistic one. We must transition from our having created a state for the ingathering of the exiles to having a state that reflects the kind of society we want to live in. Raleb Majadele is right, Hatikva - Israel's national anthem - was written only for Jews. I can see how Israeli Arabs would not feel inclined to recite it. It certainly doesn't make them feel included as part of the country. All I ask is that a non-Jew stand (like Mr. Majadele does) out of respect when Hatikva is recited. As an [...]

Rafah's Subterranean Tunnel City: The Gateway to Hamastan
By David Eshel
By seizing the so-called "Philadelphi" route along the Gaza- Egyptian international borderline, Hamas has finally taken full control of all exits and border crossings into the Gaza Strip- where they are about to create an Islamic Fundamentalist Hamastan.
Israel is highly concerned from the flow of Iranian originating weapons and munitions into Gaza through the underground tunnels under the Philadelphi line that was abandoned by Israel two years ago. That will make Gaza the terror empire of the Middle East under Iranian-Syrian, or al Qaeda control. [...]

A question remembered from 1967
Another analysis of the Six Day War? Not at all. Now that the flood of 40th-anniversary analyses by just about everyone else has abated, here is something entirely different --- a little recollection of a comment which someone uttered one night in Washington, D.C., not long before the fighting started. Although this post starts with a 1967 event, it is mainly about attitudes that endure today. [...]

Just this morning Art was mentioned in an article in The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The article is about Ryan Braun, a hot prospect/budding star recently called up by the Brewers. Braun is the highest drafted Jewish player in 40 years and is currently hitting .327. He is a candidate for rookie of the year. His father is an Israeli living in California. By BARBARA OPALL-ROME , TEL AVIV
Just days after Iranian- and Syrian-backed Hamas fighters imposed full control over the Gaza Strip, U.S. President George W. Bush promised his Israeli counterpart a 10-year military aid hike to help it handle new regional threats. Israel is seeking an additional $50 million to $60 million each year, which would raise total U.S. military grant aid from $2.4 billion in 2008 to nearly $3 billion by 2018. Nicholas Burns, U.S. undersecretary of state for political affairs, will [...]

A year or so after the Ayatollah Khomeini took out an Islamist mob contract on Salman Rushdie in 1989, the novelist appeared, after elaborate security arrangements, on a television arts show in London. His host was Melvyn Bragg, a longtime British telly grandee, and what was striking was how quickly the interview settled down into the usual cozy, literary chit-chat. Lord Bragg took Rushdie back to his earlier pre-fatwa work. "After your first book," drawled Bragg, "which was not particularly well-received." [...]

Heavy clouds will float over today's summit in sunny Sharm el-Sheikh. The Muslim Brotherhood in Gaza, Jordan and Egypt will be hovering above the four leaders participating in the talks, as will the zealots of worldwide jihad. Iran and Hezbollah will be with them on the other side, while the extreme right-wing national religious camp awaits in the corner. It is hard to say which of the leaders' chairs is shakiest [...]

And who isn't coming to this sad party? The United States, the superpower with the lion's share of responsibility for the deteriorating situation in the Middle East. Who stayed home? President George W. Bush, the one whose semi-hallucinatory dream of democratization has become a genuine reality of anarchy; whose adopted vision of two states - Israel and Palestine - has become during his tenure a distant dream. It is difficult to think of an American president who has caused more damage to Israeli interests [...]

Think back two years. Ariel Sharon was not only alive but healthy and staking his place in history on an idea he had never truly believed: that the Arabs of Palestine might be ready for peace with the Jewish state. This idea may have run against both his deepest convictions and his basic instincts. But somehow he carried many of his old comrades with him: comrades from Israel's old wars and comrades from the political right--where, after a [...]

A great debate has already begun on the subject of who lost Gaza. Increasingly, one hears that the Israelis did, or the Americans did; that the disaster is the consequence of Israeli policies or American policies, of Israeli harshness and American indifference. It is necessary to insist, therefore, that the primary responsibility for Palestinian actions falls on Palestinians. To believe the opposite is to hold a condescending imperialist view of the Palestinians as the passive objects of others; as nothing but the wretched [...]

As Kids Head to Camp, Parents Ask If They're Having Enough Fun
Rebecca Spence | Wed. Jun 27, 2007
At Camp Ramah in the Berkshires, Jewish campers wake up every morning at 7:30 and daven the morning prayers. After some swimming or maybe a Frisbee game, the older kids can, if they want, daven again in the afternoon. And at the end of a day that includes a 45-minute Judaic learning session, well, they can... daven again. [...]

Let My People Go Up to Israel Opinion David Chinitz | Wed. Jun 27, 2007
There is a Jewish conspiracy at work. It is not the one portrayed in the pernicious "Protocols of the Elders of Zion." It is not Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's Holocaust hoax, or a Zionist plot to undermine Islam. Nor is it Jewish control of the media or the world economy as Jihadists, Ku Klux Klanners, neo-Nazi skinheads and Mel Gibson conjure up for themselves. It is not even the so-called apartheid security wall that so inflames Britain's self-righteous, hypocritical, antisemitic academics and labor unions. [...]

Rabbi Kula
Hello Rabbi,
I am a convert to Judaism, or Jew-by-choice. Many elements contributed to my decision to join a synagogue and go to the mikveh.
Of course, my wife, her family, our children together and the rabbis I've learned from are significant drivers of my decision. Our commitment to family and community, our faith in the oneness of God, our value of learning and our pursuit of justice are Jewish values I embrace. [...]
