Excellent point. If Israel and ww Jews boycotted all of the unfriendly nations, there would be almost no one left to trade with at all. Still, it is unhealthy to sit still and take a continual pounding without some response. The worst thing you can give a human is a feeling of helplessness. Therefore, I would personally nominate France, for its chronic and historic anti-semitism and Norway, for its across-the-board antipathy and divestments. I keep that well in mind when I make my purchases. Sometimes it sounds silly (as when I refused to go into the French and Norwegian [...]

Ellen,
We were responding to the information you provided which seemed to me to clearly state that in a situation where there were people of all persuasions in dire need of aid, Chabad was only helping Jews. Obviously no organization has the resouces to help all the needy in this situation, but I personally don't find helping only Jews something to be proud of in terms of a Jewish response to the crisis. Sri Lanka, Thailand and India are not Islamic countries. In fact, Israel has good relatively good relations with India and gets thousands of workers from Thailand.
I have been reading the Israeli press closely and have not seen one human interest story about losses by Thai workers in Israel. All the stories are about the Israelis who were in those countries and of course there were thousands of them. Israel has done a wonderful job of rescuing their own, in fact better than any other nation. [...]

Action precedes thought; the human need to know, to understand, to explain, must defer to the supra-human imperative to aid the needy, to rush to the side of those for whom the tsunami is not a theological problem but a missing loved one, a destroyed home, a lack of food and shelter... I do need to tell you something your friends probably won't; the stuff you wrote (below) may be over the line of good taste, as some of the other members have stated their dismay. I have had fun at your expense, I admit, and you have done the same, mostly in good fun. If you need to write stuff like this, though, perhaps you would consider sending it offline, and be sure to cc. [...]

American stinginess is saving lives By Mark Steyn (Filed: 04/01/2005)
A week ago, people kept asking me for my opinion of the tsunami, and, to be honest, I didn't have one. It didn't seem the kind of thing to have an "opinion" on, even for an opinion columnist - not like who should win the election or whether we should have toppled Saddam. It was obviously a catastrophe, and it was certain the death toll would keep rising, and other than that there didn't seem a lot to opine about. [...]

We are living on a living planet geologically speaking, with a number of plates moving against on another or under one another. Earthquakes accrue on a dally bases around the world. These earthquakes are mostly of low magnitude and are in uninhabited areas and are recorded worldwide. All underground nuclear tests are also recorded within the same system. If a secret nuclear experiment was conducted that was not recorded, it could not cause any earthquake. [...]

An earthquake's damage is proportional to the amount of time plate tension is allowed to build. The "spring-back" action of the plates after the restraining force lets loose is what causes the damage. The more time - the more damage. If Israel, India or the United States were sophisticated enough to know where exactly to plant bombs in order to relieve plate [...]

Thank you for the outstanding earthquake/tsunami piece. It was illuminating as well as entertaining.
You, of course, were absolutely correct in differentiating this one as a vertical force, rather than the horizontal ones that San Andreas fault (and others) treat us to in California on a fairly regular basis. I think the point I was trying to make was that if the movements of the plates that rub and/or collide with each other took place in a smooth and gradual fashion, we wouldn't have earthquakes OR tsunamis. Was I wrong (as a layperson), or somewhere near the mark? I [...]

I thought the scale was logorithmic, and hence an increase of 1 was a factor of 10. Thus I was imagining the magnitude 9 quake as 100 times stronger than the 7.0 (or 7.1) Loma Prieta quake I experienced up close in 1989. Am I confused (again!)?

I thought that massive amounts of energy of these huge quakes was only needed to "unstick" plates that had gotten lodged together. So, conceivably, if the flow of one plate under the other were somehow "managed", less energy would be needed to accomplish the same movement. You commented that connecting the time frame between the 1980's revolt on Ache and the current situation is far fetched like connecting Bush to the Alamo. Few people today remember the radical, scornful Phil Ochs song from the 1960s, "Love Me, I'm a Liberal," in which the first-person subject announces that, among other daring activities, he reads The New Republic. A different, fiercely pacific song by Ochs, "I Ain't Marching Anymore," still resonates because it seems to commit not just the singer, but the listener, to a real act of resistance. There's some frisson in the very thought. That was certainly the case during Vietnam. And a while [...]

Your information about Carter is not an opinion. It borders on be unsubstantiated gossip and to what end? Carter help to negotiate the treaty with Egypt and secured billions of dollars of aid to Israel that continue till this day. Carter may have at time been critical of Israel's treatment of the Palestinians but so have many Israelis. Richard claims that you are just repeating things that you heard on right wing talk radio. If that is the case it is very worrisome. This is not your fault. Many people get sucked in by "Rush" But if that [...]

There was much talk of aliyah among the members of the Habonim Zionist youth movement in Bulawayo, Rhodesia in the late 50s. But while most left Bulawayo on graduating from high school because the country lacked a university, only a few actually made aliyah. One of them was Vera Altshuler, who came here in 1973 and lives in the Jordan Valley community of Menachemia. Jews came to England around the time of the Norman invasion (1066) and experienced gradually increasing animosity and persecution (including the first recorded blood libel) until they were finally expelled in 1290. A Massachusetts parent wants a book about a Canadian family that moves to a kibbutz removed from school reading lists because he says it is anti-Arab.
George Shamma wants “One More River” by Lynne Reid Banks removed from the Duxbury Middle School curriculum, the Boston Globe reported. Shamma says the book does not acknowledge the existence of Palestine and contains offensive language against Arabs. The complaint is being investigated. [...]

Not much there in the exceprt at Amazon, but the original copyright was 1973. Certainly there are any number of books that talk about the region from that period that don't acknowledge the existence of Palestine - perhaps because it didn't exist (does it today?). I wonder if Mr. Shamma can point to literature from the Arab world from that period that portrays Israel in a non-offensive way? [...]

Let me offer a far simpler, un-nuanced perspective. Good characters manifest inner tension and turmoil, they are not stereotypic, though they often embody a stereotype. I think Shakespeare likely didn't have an axe to grind, or likely even a set attitude about Jews. He had the convenience of a publicly accepted stereotype and the genius to get inside the human being inside that stereotype and express his humanity, which is to say his complexity. [...]

Four army buddies, each in distress about having lost, or being vulnerable to losing their careers to outsourcing steal some secret military technology and use it to down corporate aircraft carrying major outsourcing CEO's. A novel uses the writer to tell its own story. In this case the effort was successful, i.e., the anti-corporate terrorist plot was carried off without a significant hitch, but failed to have any impact on the behavior of business and in fact built public sympathy for the companies. As you can imagine, I wasn't happy. [...]

The vast majority of the "200 or so counter-protesters," organized by the Middle East Children's Alliance and including many from Jewish Voice for Peace, my organization, stood across the street in a silent vigil with photos of Palestinian children killed by settlers and the military and signs indicating their dismay at the deaths of all civilians in the conflict, especially children. Having read about this case in the JPost and the NY Times, I don't see why this case calls for more of a response from the members of Habonet than any other quadruple murder of a family. It is sad. It is horrific. It is criminal. It is awful. But this is a community where Moslems and Coptic Egyptians coexist very well. Why should a group of Jews be asked to [...]

This article is well worth reading and knowing about.
It isn't particularly lengthy, but I would like to address the complaint that some of the articles, forwarded or not, are too lengthy, or in effect, "have too many words" (a la Mozart, who was accused of putting in "too many notes"). I don't think we would write a letter of complaint to the newspaper that their articles are too lengthy. If we are short on time, or our brain cells are overloaded, we have the option to skip to lighter, shorter stuff. When we want reading material, we either [...]

Gee Steve, back in the day, it was a good thing to be a good person of conscience. We wore Sharansky's name on our medallions and fought oppression. I guess that's quaint and obsolete, these days, just like the Geneva conventions.
Are you seriously suggesting that anyone on this list questions the right of Jews to live in Israel? Or does it just rankle you that not everyone supports the maximalist radical nationalists as one who reads what you forward to this list is lead to conclude that you do? [...]

So does being 'anti-Israel' equate to being 'anti-semetic'? I personally don't believe so. Would you describe those elements in judaism who for messianic beliefs or other esoteric religious reasons are 'anti-zionist' as also anti-semetic. Do jewish organizations who fund raise for settlements guarantee that the monies raised do not support extreme elements in the settler movement who vow to oppose the gov't with force? Basically you partially answered the question yourself but jumped to your own concludsion... 'Who knows what is in someone else's heart? Well if you don't know then why have you made the statement you [...]
