You, of course, were absolutely correct in differentiating this one as a vertical force, rather than the horizontal ones that San Andreas fault (and others) treat us to in California on a fairly regular basis. I think the point I was trying to make was that if the movements of the plates that rub and/or collide with each other took place in a smooth and gradual fashion, we wouldn't have earthquakes OR tsunamis.
