Wrong Turn The "road map" won't lead to peace if it bypasses the causes of war.

BY ABRAHAM D. SOAFER Friday, May 2, 2003 12:01 a.m. EDT

Immediately after the 1991 Gulf War, the first Bush administration convened in Madrid an international conference on the Israel-Palestinian conflict. This was an event that political leaders all over the world had been pursuing as if it were the holy grail of international diplomacy. You posted the article by Soafer on Habonet. Thank you. I normally avoid anything coming out of the Hoover Insititute. But this particular article turned my head around. At a conference on anti-Semitism at the Center for Jewish History earlier this week one panelist told a classic Jewish joke:

This should be left to our own consciences and our ability to pay. While some may think that $10 or $18 isn't a lot to ask for, there may be some people who cannot afford that-including some of our chevre in Israel who are living in hard times, and some of those in America who are on limited incomes. The call went out and that should be enough, but a public listing of people who "pay" is basically against all Jewish teachings I have had regarding "tzedaka" and "donations." Habonet is not a synagogue; it is a list of hundreds of chevre in all kinds of situations. Habonim is not nor never was a synagogue; and from what I remember of "kupah"- the concept was that we all shared, and those who were able gave more than those who were not-did. But recognition and "plaques" were not a "quid pro quo"- If people need to be recognized for giving, there are places and causes that are available to them. No one will announce what anyone else gives. That's not what was meant by roll-call, as far as I can tell. The only announcements made were completely voluntary. I also don't like that particular kind of fund-raising because it often ends up putting undue pressure on those can't afford to match donations. I once believed that the positions espoused by intelligent, honest, ethical people - especially those who write well - couldn't help but be just; which means that their stand on issues probably paralleled mine. Wrong. With time I found out that all the smarts weren't apportioned to political radicals, economic egalitarians nor secular humanists. I discovered that there are in the human family those who differ from my views, yet who are as genuinely committed (i.e. without shtick and without spin) to values as I am. The highest bidder will win a set of three 78 rpm records called Songs From The Festival Of First Fruits, sung by the Brandeis Singers under the direction of Max Helfman. See http://lajs2.home.att.net/bios/MaxHelfman.htm for bio.

"The Brandeis Camp Institute of the West, with its 2000 acres of picturesque (Santa Susana, Simi Valley) California country, immediately suggests the hills of Judea to the imaginative young person. Exposed to skillful direction and programming, the Brandeis camper acquires a new understanding of and pride in his Jewish heritage and a new dignity as a human being." Yes, The 78rpm album Phil has is interesting in a couple of ways. The Brandeis-Bardin Institute is extremely well-known here and runs excellent programs from youth to adult, including educational seminars, weekend functions, a music series and Israeli dancing with Dani Dassa's son, David. They have been going since the early Fifties, and as a matter of fact were the only civilization in those hills for quite a while, so they are officially located in "Brandeis, CA". Some of you may remember this quote that Shula posted soon after Sid died. I believe she said that she found it when she went through his wallet. It's worth repeating. So many of us remember both of them with a very special fondness both for who they were as individuals and for their contributions to the Movement that was so important to them. No WMD on day 71 of the search, perhaps on day 72... Whether you think the war was a good thing or not, the propaganda that was spread from Washington was a wonder to behold and just as al-Jazeera is called into account below, one has to ask whether CNN or FOX or any of the others did better or just suited our prejudices better.
