When I wrote a letter of protest to Amazon about their linkup with Intifada.com, they answered me that the page is no longer displayed. It had been an Associate site, which presumably meant that it didn't violate any of the Amazon guidelnes for such sites. Sites are supposedly unacceptable to Amazon if they, among other things, promote violence, promote illegal activities or promote discrimination. If I can provide proof of any of those things in regard to Intifada.Com,perhaps I can at least get an apology from Amazon. And that would [...]

I didn't see it as propagating "race hatred." Its author was, however, heavy with sarcasm. How should we view Jesse Jackson's sanctimony in light of his behaviors? Is Al Sharpton really acceptable for anything other than the role of political spoiler? He hasn't done anything other than self-aggrandize. Remember his advocacy for Tawana Brawley? Do you really think that Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe is just effecting fair land redistribution? And is Fidel Castro really the world's best exemplar of Democracy? I don't think that hard truths are race hatred. There's something out [...]

I respectfully disagree with those who condemn Habonim-Dror's participation in a rally in support of Israel but in opposition to the occupation. It seems that almost everyone agrees that some of the land must be given up. Why is expression of this idea shameful? Downtown Manhattan is a mess. Many of the 50,000 people who work at the World Trade Center are unaccounted for -- presumably thousands injured, hundreds dead.
I have not heard any reports of injury outside of the immediate vicinity of the Trade Center. For those who are not familiar with New York geography, that means that the vast majority of the city has not been directly affected by the explosions. [...]

In light of today's Arab acts of war against America, and the Palestinian celebrations in honor of them, it would be suicidal for Habonim to participate in the anti-occupation rally on 9/23.
At best, Habonim would make itself totally irrelevant by such an act. After today's terrorism, no American will look kindly on a group which is calling for "understanding", "compassion" or "negotiations" with Arab terrorists, which is what the PLO has proven that it still is. [...]

You're correct that the US supported Afghan rebel groups vs the Red Army. I'm not certain that we supported bin Laden directly. I read that we gave arms to Pakistan, which gave them to militias of its choice.
It's been widely reported recently, on BBC, CNN, et al, that bin Laden's group was founded in the "madrasa's", or religious schools, of Pakistan. This being the case, his group would have been virulently anti-US regardless of any contact between the US and them. [...]

The best quote of the war so far came from George W. Bush’s meeting with the four senators from New York and Virginia (the two states that came under attack). ‘When I take action,’ said the President, ‘I’m not gonna fire a $2 million missile at a $10 empty tent and hit a camel in the butt. In the thirties and the forties it used to be considered a put down to be called a Fellow Traveler - someone who wasn't quite a card-carrying member of the communist party but not an entirely reliable and "patriotic" American, either. In Habonim we knew we were OK (Sam Bergman actually had lapel buttons made up for the members with that message.) It was OK to avoid the extremes without feeling that it deprived us of ideological commitment. Our pink banners had more social justice, the brotherhood of man (women weren't discovered till later), anti-colonialism, non-exploitation and non-aggression than the [...]

Hats off to Steve for putting this issue front and center.
If our govt agrees to hide Israel behind some skirt during all this coalition building and terrorism fighting then we will just be perpetuating all that we seek to end - the ability among the family of nations to openly hate and ostracize (and terrorize) a nation of the world rather than negotiate differences openly. This book is important for a lot of reasons. In the context of current events, perhaps the Catholic Church can (finally) set an example for their Muslim brothers & sisters by coming clean about their responsibility for anti-Semitism and the Holocaust. Only after such a clearance of the air can we begin to deal with the Christian claims in Jerusalem and with our more general relations. And such a "coming clean" would do wonders in laying out the expectations of the Muslims in their dealings with Israel and the Jews. [...]

This might be a moot point, because I doubt that anyone reading this, at least from Habonim, partakes in the killing. I should just say, though, that let's get rid of the killing, the "shlugging," and just contribute the gelt.
In an unexpected way, this is actually related to Israeli religious politics, since most or all people who'd like to see a third temple support the reinstitution of animal sacrifice. Aren't some of them even practicing it? Maybe "Slugging Kappores" functioned as a way of keeping the notion of sacrifice alive (quote-unquote, in effect, until the real thing [...]

REFLECTIONS ON A MOTE OF DUST
As the Voyager 1 spacecraft headed out of the Solar System in 1990, it looked back and snapped a "family portrait" of the Sun and planets. From beyond Pluto the Sun looks like a bright star surrounded by a few faint dots. The Earth is one of those dots. Reprinted below is an excerpt from a presentation made by Carl Sagan in 1996 about that striking image.
