I'm writing this ON-LIST because I needed to express an emotional reaction to some of the nastiness Habomembers like you, Noam, and others have put out there lately.
I almost didn't respond because I don't respond, in principle, to threats of violence, even if you thought you were kidding by using expressions like "hurt you." But I do want to help Ezra and the Foundation so: [...]

Aliya,
I have written to habonet sparingly this year, and have mostly been asking questions in hopes of eliciting insights from people in Israel on recent developments, so I'm somewhat taken aback by this public attack. I'll be happy to discuss this with you offline, as I don't understand what you are referring to, but I want to object publicly. [...]

Whether or not the Arabs are justified in hating us is a different question from what Israel should do given the fact that they do. Even as Israel gives back land, the Arabs continue to voice their hatred. If the hatred will stop after the peace process is completed, then israel is doing a wise thing. But if the hatred will continue and the land being given back will be used as a base to direct efforts to attack (with the ultimate goal of destroying) Israel, then it would seem that Israel is not doing a wise thing. The regular hired workers were well loved and loved the Meshek and worked their for many many years...weddings and bar mitzvahs were shared. there were both arab and Jews....The workers who came to pick the oranges were a different matter. They worked kablanut ---piece work and only for the katif and then they were gone. They were all Arab women and girls and the conditions were sometimes tense. One had to haggle with them at times on how much they had picked and stuff like that. The Rais who [...]

While they're at it, they should get the Haradim involved.

Although on the surface the Arab and Jewish workers employed by the Kibbutz seemed happy with their lot they probably were not as happy as you thought. There were Arab workers who families owned the land that Gesher Haziv was established on. I am sure they appreciated the opportunity to work on the land their families formerly owned for minimum agricultural wages. With regards to the Jewish workers like Motel who I worked with for many years, I know they always felt exploited and never missed [...]

I make no bones about carrying out my responsibility. I take the responsibility seriously and I try and manage the company to the benefit of both my board of directors and the people who work for me. Your attack on my performance in this capacity certainly has no connection with the topic under discussion which was the relationship between hired workers and the Kibbutz. I think that relationship was indicative of a serious flaw in [...]

It would appear that chaverim forget a basic principle of kibbutz and that is hagshama atzmit therefore, no hired labor or in other words, "no exploitation and no profit from the work of others." When Ben Gurion asked the kibbutz movements to hire new immigrants because there was no other source of employment for them, his request was accepted and probably welcomed by many kibbutzim. This crack in the door unfortunately, [...]

I think it is time we were realistic about "unions"-- Not all of them are the great thing you make them out to be. Just look at what they have done in the entertainment industry. While healthcare and retirement benefits are important, they also had a role in the exodus of an entire section of the industry from Los Angeles which started in the mid 80's, drove up salaries to an exorbitant rate, and also put many other [...]
